Understanding .com , .net , .org , .sg , .co.uk , . . . etc. in a Domain Name. (DUPLICATE)
Notice, when you identified a domain name, the last few characters at the very end of a domain name.
These final component of a domain name, or domain name endings are called TLD (top-level domain). So lets refer to those last parts of a domain name as TLD, from now on.
Let’s try identifying this thing called TLD, in the domain names we discussed on the previous post (What is a Domain name?).
- gmail.com – here TLD is .com
- outlook.com – here TLD is .com
- london.ac.uk – here TLD is .uk ( let’s not get diverted in to what .ac is about, at least for now!)
- icrc.org – here TLD is .org
I suppose, you could identify the TLD in “invosset.com”, by now.
Now you know that, there are 3 different TLDs. Well, that’s not all. There are lot of TLDs available now. We will list out all available TLDs in another post. At least, you should be able to identify the TLD when you see a domain name. When you want to buy/take ( i.e. register ) a domain name for your personal use or for your business, you will need to decide which TLD, you want to use.
What is a Domain name? (DUPLICATE)
Easiest way, possibly, to understand a domain name is to have a look at your email address. Let’s see some examples of email address:
Example 1: [email protected]
You notice the “gmail.com” that comes after the ‘@’ symbol? That’s a domain name. i.e. “gmail.com” is a domain name.
Example 2: [email protected].
Here, “outlook.com” is what comes after the “@” symbol. So, “outlook.com” is a domain name.
Example 3: [email protected]
Here, “london.ac.uk” is a domain name.
Example 4: [email protected].
I suppose, you could already identify the domain name from the above email address.
If you want to have an online presence, first thing you need to do is to get a domain name. How to get a domain name or where to get one, we will get into that on another post. Hope, by now, you have a better understanding on what a domain name is.
